When does a pinkie become a snapper?

a pinkie will become a snapper from the day it is born the term pinkie-rugger-squire repesents juvinile Snapper....

a juvenile snapper will come into Adult snapper around 3-4kg mark approxamatly

but we also have to remember snapper has a small growth rate so for an example 2kg snapper may already be 10year old fish

cheers

By my reconing I would say 50cm.That I think is the recognised (1/2)yardstick in Victoria. Therefore my 46cm pinkie still leaves me as a Virgin.

Judging by the size of those horses youall seem to catch in Sth oz, I am genuinely suprised at that. I know in NSW everything is deemed a snapper no matter how old or what size.

steve

I here what ya saying mate i think alot of people even myself look at if you havent caught a snapper until a certain size then ya still a virgin but truth is you have....

I think its a goal for most people to get a fish over 50cm so they can class they have a snapper of some standing

anyway heres hoping for tommorow night that the weather gods play well in South OZ and i can get out to a few marks and chasea snapper

cheers

Bloody cheek!!!!! :o :o

I consider a snapper when they have reached around the 2kg mark. They don't need a bump on their head as I believe that is a feeding mark and I have caught snapper that don't have the distinctive bump.

G'Day Des,

Whilst I am sitting here sniping from the sidelines about other peoples catch (or lack of it), what I would give just to be able to get out there with you guys.

Work commitments in Brisbane are killing me at the moment, I was hoping to get out on Cup Day but now have a 3 day industry seminar in Brisbane to attend.

Three days a week up there is starting to wear me down, boat hasn't had a drink since JULY!!!!

Geez Daryl that has to be the lord of all snapper that I have ever seen even if there is only part of it there. Would be interested to know how much it would have went had it all been there.

All the guys "in the know" got together and closest guestimate they could come up with was 18 to 22 kilos. Thats one big mama.

:P Dasher if the weight they guessed is correct , there goes an Australian Record. :x
Snapper
Size
1kg - 10kg. can reach 20kg.
Habitat
Snapper frequent southern Australian coastal waters from Queensland around to northern West Australia. They are found around offshore and inshore reefs, estuaries, harbors, bays, off rocks, breakwalls and beaches. Snapper are a bottom dweller and tend to hold and feed over very rough reef and in deep holes.
Qualities
The fish tend to run hard and deep when hooked heading for the cover of the reef. In deep water the fish can provide a tough fight. Characteristic double shake of head before each run.
Record
Australian record 18.4kg.
Best Bait

bait: Crab, Fish flesh, Garfish, Mussel, Octopus, Pilchard, Pippi, Prawn, Slimy mackerel (blue), Squid, Tuna
Tackle

Link: 10kg main line.
Hook: 2/0 - 8/0 Mustad 92554 Beak.
Rig: Snapper reef rig with a heavy sinker and two droppers.
More info: Rigs & Baits for Snapper

Hints
Drift over reef and gravel areas. Best times are from first light to sun up early morning with a change in tide and run up to full tide. For strip baits make the bait size equal to about 3 - 5cm hooked at one end. Snapper feed better when a berley is used. Fishing before a full moon is productive.

From what little I know about good snapper spots I would say that the record would come from either Whyalla in South Australia or the southern coastline of Western Australia. Have seen on video(sadly not in person)some fish up to 30 odd pound.

Glenn and Steve, the guys that worked out the figures were made up of half a doz or so gun fishos and a couple of blokes in the catering field. The fishos tried to work out the length and then estimate the weight, whereas the catering guys worked out by the % weight of wastage on snapper when they prepare/fillet them. They all ended up in that range. This occurred at this years Toyota Classic at Fraser Island. Sad thing is the guy evidently had already said any snapper over 20lb goes back regardless of comp. So if he had of been able to land it prior to attack it would have been photographed and released.

Ya gotta think it's a big call when it's a comp and a lot of money involved, but others have said he's a stickler for "if it ain't gunna cook up great it goes back regardless." Heard he hates "totally C&R fishos" saying, if they're not out for feed they should stay home and play fishing games on the computer. Gotta admire the guy. 8)

I am entering a comp in Sydney in a few weeks time and I asked the bloke who is running it what happens if I catch a big flathead do I let it go back or do I keep it to win a prize and trophy. He said it was up to me. I am not a C&R man and will keep a feed but have let a hell of a lot of fish go back since the '80's
