does anyone know if you can just plug in 12v led lights or does it need some sort of transformer?

I presume you are talking about trailer lights. Should run thru your normal trailer light plug, they actually draw less amps than conventional lights.

I am in the process of changing over all my bulb lights (exc nav lights) to Leds. they only draw 10% of the power a light of the same brightness does.
The only think is the light is a bit more focused. Good in a lot of ways, but not so good for general deck lighting.
