I have been fishing for a long time but have neer fished for Squid.
Iam seeking veiws on how you go about catching them. Do you cast & retrive or fish under a float? :?
Do you fish in close? :? , or can you catch them out at 15 - 20m while you are trying for snapper? :?
Do you use jigs or bait? :?
When you can't catch your own, what type of fresh quid would you buy for bait from the markets? :?

Cheers.........Shoulders.

im far from the squid master, but from what i have seen , drifting over weedy ground in 1-3m works well, and some piers work really well just look for the black ink on the jetty, they dont bite as such when using a jig more like grab and hang on..... i m starting to use a hand line over the side of the boat where ever i fish with a jig on it just sitting there 1-2m off the bottom , so if there is one out there i have a chance.....

Last season I caught quite a few whilst fishing for snapper out deep. Mainly used a baited jig under a float on a hand line, but found I copped a few tangles.

This season I have taken to having 2 additional rods with me for that purpose. One has a baited jig under a float set at about 2-3 metres under the surface and a 'clothed' jig that I cast and retrieve spasmotically.

Haven't caught any this year yet and have been told recently that squid are currently spawning over grass beds around Mornington. Will try and get down there over the next week and report back.

I think that sometimes squid are confused with a snapper run. Last year I found that the rod would buckle followed by a short run. Retrieving the line I found the bait had been mauled. Put down a squid jig at the same location and caught large squid. Biggest being 3kg. This prompted me to have one out at all times.

Do conditions such as, day, night , high or low tide changes, time of day,
play a big role :?:

Shoulders, I didn't find anything influenced the catching of squid last season and that's the only experience I have in PPB.

Maybe some others will advise differently.

Silver whiting on handline works fantastic. Try off the grass beds outr from the cottage by the sea (Queenscliff). If you don;t catch one there you're pretty hard up. Try drifting back along the 5m mark from Point Lonsdale direction back towards Queenscliff itself. I have been actching calamari between 3-4kgs. The other option is wait till the arrow head squid come on the bite (around the same tim as the barracouta) and get out to the 50m mark dircetly out from the heads and drop your jigs...anything silvery they are absoulutely verociuops little buggers and even on some occasions you will bring in two and three at a time (eating each other!).

Good luck.
