G'Day all,
Some years back I had the opportunity to take the family on holidays to Lakes Entrance along with my 5.65 metre fibreglass half cabin boat.
After hearing how good the ocean fishing was I thought I might give it a go out there (knowing nothing about crossing a bar). A couple of days before I noticed a good article on this subject in a boating magazine, so I bought a copy and read it, over and over and over again.
To cut a long story short, I had great success crossing the bar the on the first trip, but nearly spilt it big time on the second trip out. We got back in but most on board were in tears and I had very white knuckles and white face I can assure you.
To put it blunt, I was over confident and didn't check the sea conditions past the bar (which we couldn't see from water level until over the first few breakers).
Anyway, we made it and lived to learn from it.
To better help others understand the risks associated with bar crossing, I have a scanned copy of the 7 page article which I am happy to forward if people message me with an email address.
It will end up about 1.5 meg so if you have dial up and would prefer a fax I can fax it from work if easier.
It is a good read for boaties.
Grant, can forward it to you to list on the site if there are no copyright issues???
