Hi guys, Joy bought me a new laptop for xmas , :D . Ive set it up and its on line but was wondering if it were possable to to run 2 modems off the one internet connection if I were to purchase another modem or would I have to pay for another connection ? I am not very good with computers to say the least and would appreciate any advice you can offer.

Karren

are you on broadband or just dial up?

actually by a 5 way switch becuase and 2 network cards

place i net work card in your pc and 1in the laptop (the laptop will need a different network card then the pc)

then get some network cable and run from the switch to both pc and laptop

if adsl run your adsl modem into the switch by using the ethernet port (no need to run adsl by usb plus it is faster through ethernet port)

if running dial up

just connect modem just as you would for 1 computer

instal the network card into both pc and laptop (still need the special laptop network card for lap top)

all you need to do now is run network cable between pc and laptop

You will have to set up a host connect in which i would set up on your pc

you can name computer1 being PC say to joy

laptop name to Karren

host computer name it say hillbilly or just plane home

once you have done this you can set permissions on what you want others to look at while sharing wether you just wish for a person to peruse or if you want to allow full access and to be able to change files

so in the question you are asking Karren you will not need 2 modems for sharing at home

mind you your internet speed will slow down by sharing

also 2 modems will not work of the same phone line you will need seprate phone lines for that

I have 2 computers Karren and i have succesfully networked them with adsl and dil up with out any hassle

I have a spare hub you could use Karren but it is only good for dial up access

OZ, you should work with me! I design systems like that!

Karren,

A couple of key questions.

Are you intending to be both online at the same time?
if yes, Will you be dialing in from the same location at the same time?

I see no reason why you cant dial in twice with the same account. I sued to do it.

also Karren here is a couple of diagrams on how to network them they are not good diagrams but it should show how it is done

first diagram is for adsl using a switch and is the only way to network adsl i think unless others know a better way

the next diagram has 2 the 1 on the left is showing how to connect up using 56 dial up and just connect both pcs and the other is showing how to do it by using a hub/switch (a hub will not work for adsl)

I do hope this helps you understand on connecting up both computers to each other by using 1 phone line and modem

Grant

thats as far as my knowledge goes i am afraid as i have never had to setup an enitre office i assume it would be the same

by having a host then just adding branches off the host to all the secondaries

Thankyou so much guys for all the info you have given me its much appreciated.
I got a certificate with the laptop which gives me a free one hour home visit to set the computer up and I just discovered that it also covers setting up a home network so I will give them a go and see how far I get and if needs be I know I can always get advice from you guys.
Thanks again big time.
cheers
