View Full Version : Speed Vs Revs (when fuel is 2.00 per litre!)

At the marina where I keep the limo the price of premium fuel is 2.00 per litre. So no ore for me! Jerry cans it is.
I have been doing a bit of research into what is the optimum speed to drive at. I like to fish the south end of the bay when the weather is good, so I motor down there.
This can be a considerable cost.
So.... I have started gathering some data on what revs give me what speed. Can anybody confirm that more revs mean more fuel?

I could only do up to 10kts as I was in the Yarra channel, I intend to do a proper run next time I am out.
have you ever considered this or am I nuts?

Logic would have more fuel usage with greater revs.
Apart from entering/departing channels/harbours etc I drive by revs alone. Best revs for my boat is 4200, motor trimmed to 3 and just purring. This combination gives me the best economy.
With a bit of chop and the motor trimmed down a little I can hear the motor definately working harder and the fuel economy is not as good.

ive never had the pleasure of worring bout fuel cost yet, (8hp yammy)
i havernt had the 40hp out enough to test it,20lt and theres some still left...lol
its going to be like a car id rekon... if i drive to get my kids at 110kms i use HEAPS more than when i set c/c to 98kms they are 300kms away. on a roun d trip @ 98kms id use $50 fuel, not much change from $70 if 110kms.
REVs do make a huge impact IMO.

I will be a boat owner again by September and eventhough Im paying cash for a cheap little run about but the way fuel prices are going I will have to take out a bloody loan to pay for the fuel. :x

Agreed. If you have trip computer have a look at the instant litres/100 when doing over 100 compared to just under 100

My territory is the same. If do 110 or under great economy 110 -120 not bad 120+ and i need a tanker behind me.

I have bought 2 X 20ltre Jerry cans and topped up the boat at 1.40 per litre as opposed to 1.98 per litre at the marina.
Saved my self 23.00
A couple of times and I will have paid for the jerry cans and be in the blue.
Over a full tank of fuel I will save 52.00 per full tank. Thats just too much to throw away, especially if I want to go hard for snpper this year and do alot of motoring hours.
I also drove at the lowest planing speed acheivable (15-17kts) and this reduced my usuage massively.
The saga continues.
