Accuracy - poor to medium perhaps
Too many variables to be accurate enough

When I was on the farm we had a tape measure that when placed around the middle of a beast would give an approx live weight and a dressed weight. Many moons ago there was a formula available, I can't recall where, based on the length and girth of a fish, to give it's weight.

If you measure me after 4-5 schooners, you can tell that I am pissed!

Found one
http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/water/fhp/fish/faq/trophy.htm
bass weight = (length x length x girth) / 1,200
pike weight = (length x length x length) / 3,500
sunfish weight = (length x length x length) / 1,200
trout weight = (length x girth x girth) / 800
walleye weight = (length x length x length) / 2,700

Grant we have tried the formulas on a few fish and they get pretty close...its not deadly accurate but gets you close enough to a good guess

Grant it is on the "Brag Mat" sold by NSW Fisheries, turn it over after measuring and it has a very good picture of the common NSW species to use for ID and lenght vs weight scales next to the pics. They cost $10 ea. but if you buy in bulk they're cheaper.
I could post a pic if you tell me how
