Gang,
Just an idea, but I, (like I reckon a few others here) buy my bait from vic market. What about arranging a time and trying to do a deal with someone there.Bait is a big expense for me and,if a deal because a few of us are there can be done can only benifit us all

I usually go to Springy but doesn't matter as long as it is fresh
Got to get my chest freezer hooked up outside though first

Come on guy's, get your butt's to the pier. Then your gar/squid/coutta/salmon only gets frozen once by you!

I'll be at Flinders again this week end if anyone's keen.

Time does get limited though, and I'd probably be in for a bit too. 8)

For me a big part of getting ready for the snapper run is to get out and catch my own bait, another reason for catching my own is that down this end of PPB there are no good bait outlets just freezers at servo,s where the bait is sooo old and freezer burnt that its only use is for berley or feeding the gulls.
But after reading this post I think I will be making a trip to Springvale to fill up my bait freezer,
So can anyone please tell me whether its a market at Springvale and if so what day,s is it on or is it a shop ?
thanks
Karren

Karren - I usually park in the big carpark off Buckingham Avenue and then walk through the smaller arcade back towards Windsor Avenue. There are a couple of fish shops in there. Just watch the fish to make sure its fresh enough(I know the pilchards are usually frozen). I find the mussels there are fresh and good value and also the pippis (often these are alive still)

cheers Adam

They looked ok,no pillies or much baitie type fish.
Spoke to a couple of guys but they didn`t seem that interested in doing any sort of deal.
Next opition was the the guy on line.??????.
Will try in springy wedesday maybe?

you wont get much cheaper that 4.50/kg for silvers at springvale. lets face it. thats pretty cheap. when picking them, a fishmonger friend of mine told me the best way to see if they're fresh is to feel they're guts. if they're firm they're good. your also looking for bright red gills. the older they are the duller they become.

Did this post come to a happy ending i.e did everyone ended up with enough bait to last the whole snapper season or is it still a working project? :D

Maybe it was hidden by one of the BBQ attendees if they thought they were going to be served up a silver whiting on bread instead of snag...
