I have re-kitted prior to the trip to port douglas to all wide mouth hooks, the gamakhatsu type.
I did this for two reasons.
1./ I mainly catch and release and they are supposed to have a much higher swollow rate. Thus a better survival rate.
2./ You are supposed to not have to set the hook as the swiming action of the fish sets the hook as they swim off.
I found we had a very high (higher than with normal j hooks) swollow rate. Which means the fish effectivly goes off to die somewhere. and I found we missed loads of hook ups.
We end up using old j hooks I took just in case. The other thing is the circle hook will not hook a small mouthed fish like a whiting. we were getting picked to pieces, then swithced hooks and cought feed of whiting for dinner.
DOes anybody else use circle type hooks?
