Hi all,
Time for another favourite past time, chasing toothies Landbased.
There are various locations around the bay where you can do this, most know about point lonsdale, but my favourite locations are Rosebud pier and the Altona pier,
Rosebud first,
Winds, southerly of any direction, baits, striped tuna, whole or fillet, I prefer whole or cut in half, ( depends on size of strippie) lots of sealice in the area, you could also float out a live pinkie or salmon ( legal size of course) have baits suspended approx 6-8ft under balloons, keeps it off the bottom and away from most of the sealice, they do swim up and attack the bait but not as much as when bait is down deeper, float baits out approx 150-300mtrs, baits will then drift around with the tides, covers more area that way, berly not required, as it is a swimming beach I am totaly against the use of burly to attract them, yes results would be far greater if we used it, but the way I see it is if we attractt them then it could end up like tathra, no shark fishing, a shark can smell the bait miles away.
Altona, I fish it the same as Rosebud but a northerly wind is required, unfortunalty it has to be a howlling wind as I have found if its a light wind, 20knots or less, you have the problem of boats cutting you off when baits are set, dont have that problem at Rosebud,
Tackle used, wire trace approx 15ft at 180kg, ( have only been chewd through once ) reel spooled with 1200mtrs 15kg trilene, have a few standup game rods, I prefer the Wilson live fibre rated at 15-24kg, flying gaff (2 ), gimble, harness, gloves, spare traces, balloons, thermo of coffee, tucker and a comfterble chair to relax in.
Whilst waitng for the big strike, it pays to put out a couple of bottom baits, have caught snapper and gummies from both locations, also the big eagle rays can be fun,
This season I will be trying other locations around the bay, something new.
Any questions feel free to ask.
