ive put a sounder in the tinny, now to learn how to read it properly, works great but dont know how to tell the grass from sand bottoms

What sounder did you get?
and maybe take a few pics next time your out and maybe one of us maybe able to decipher what your sounder is picking up

its a piranha max10, was on the lower end of the scale. 160 vertical pixels.
theres a dvd out on how to read sounders , might try to find it.

ok so i know the ground i fish at, and know with the f/f im lost....
anchored, and in the first pic i changed from whiteline to stucture

sand or shoal bottom, bait fish on top picture on the right.

if i didnt have the sounder on , id tell ya its weed bottom very thick and floating weed . when it warms up a little im going to dive it and see...

Chris, it is difficult to gat a clear picture whilst at anchor. But if I had to guess I'd say the bottom is sand/mud/shoal only due to its thickness and that's about it.
The second thick line just down from the surface is more than likely an echo off your boat due to the sensitivity/gain setting a bit high for being at anchor. The setting might be okay whilst in motion so as not to create an echo.
