Mars_Volta requested a bit of info on tackle required, so here it is for all who want to give it a go.
For landbased I have 3 rods and to reels,
Reels,
Okuma 50tw spooled with 1200mtrs of 15kg trilene.
Diawa sealine 400h, spooled with 24kg trilene, ( still going strong after 30yrs of hard yakka )
Rods
I use a Wilson Live Fibre 15-24kg landbased , 9ft. also have 2 short strokers with a 15-24kg load.
Everyone has thier own opinion with the rods, most LBG fishos prefer the short strokers, but Since I have been using the Wilson, its my prefered rod, both reels suit all rods.
The following items are a must,
Gimble, harnes, ( there are a few out there so preferance is upto the individual), wire trace, swivells ( game), crimps and a good crimper, hooks, no larger than 14/0, balloons, cork from wine bottles, flying gaff and pole, rope, gloves, fishing buddy, never go on your own, you need a gaff/wire man.
fresh bait, I prefer bonito and strippies, have found the best place to get them is from the footscray markets, the asians always seem to have them in stock. be prepared to pay though, i purchased some the other week at $17 per kg, that worked out to around $16 per fish.
cost , that can vary, depends on how much you are prepared to layout, you should how ever pick up rod, reel and accesseries for $1000, might be able to do it under, but once you start to get all the bits it does add up,
most of all you need plenty of staying power, longest tussle i have had went for 4hrs and 30mins, and the shark still won. and that was on 24kg.
Locations I will post under report section.
No doubt I have left something out,
hope that helps those that are thinking about chasing the toothies,
All my sharking is landbased, but the short strokers are ideal for boat.
