I usually respool my lighter rods and do a full break down of my reels. Cleaning them and reoiling them with sowing machine oil.

I empty my tackle bag (watch the kids are not too close) and re sort all my hooks and sinkers and SP's and the myriad of crap I find in the bottom...

I also start to plan my winters fishing as I fish more over winter than Summer...

I try to go through all my gear before each main trip away. 2-3 times a year. As I started out as a beach fisho, I practice cleaning my reels after each fish.

As I fish all year round I make a habbit of taking very good care of my gear after each trip out, but after the summer fishing is over I strip all my reels and oil em and replace parts or even the reel if needed and respool.
I find it also helps me to have seperate gear for the 2 bays so I have rods only used in PPB and differant rods for WPB, my wpb gear always gets more of a beating than ppb.

I've never really had to maintain reels as I've always bought cheap, but now with a boat, I have shimano baitrunners and okuma surf reels, etc... What oil should I be using to lubricate them when I get around to stripping them and cleaning them? Grant you mentioned sewing machine oil. Any particular brand to look out for?

Is there a cleaning agent that is good to use for getting grit out of the guts of the reel?

Cheers!

PS: Is INOX any good in keeping reels well maintained?

I think so - I give my reels a wipe down with it after each trip.

cheers,

Ive been using crc on my reels and in an emergency Ive also used cooking oil as a once off, so is crc or wd40 the wrong thing to use ?

I read in a fisho mag that lanox is best, but crc and wd40 are ok internally.

A drop of any quality oil is enough as the fact you clean them and get them fresh makes the biggest difference.

As for washing them I do the whole reel in hot soapy water.... works a treat.

in the current "fishing DVD" there is a daiwa reel technican who gives tips on reel maintenance.

an interesting point he made was that WD40/CRC (and like products) actually cause grease to break down and disolve and should not be used inside fishing reels.

Nothing fancy, hot soappy water for the reels then rince them off.
Wipe the rods down with a soft cloth, we take the reels off after each trip and leave them to dry on an old nappy, we pretty much tidy up the boat and tackle as we go. This probably sounds harder than it is but seems to save on dissapointments, would be heart breaking to hook up the fish of a life time, only to loose it to gear failure or frayed line.

i usuall give them a spray with water after each trip let drip dry and then a good shake to get any water under the endge of the spool on the egg beaters, i usually pull the reels down for a re-grease during winter when we are all wishing to get out and have a go, i always back the drag off between trips also

Lanox: it's the best of all the sprays.
Just hose them off with cold water and leave to air dry. then invert and give a light spray.Lanox is even said to be a fish attractant.

A light spray with CT18 truck wash when I do the boat.
Go inside have a bite to eat or watch the footy then come out and give the whole lot a preasure blast and wipe down.

Mine come into the shower with me for a wash. I then let them dry and spray with Inox. Never had a problem just watch for hooks when your in the shower or you may not be happy with what you catch lol.
