Ok, this question's mostly aimed at JPS since he's the one been helping me getting me going with my surf casting, but thought I'd throw it open to get other people's opinions as well...

With a birthday coming up end July and then Father's Day in September, I figure now is about time that I started looking at options to update my surf gear and start dropping hints around the family. (It sure worked last year - I said "I want a new bream outfit!", reply was "Ok - get whatever you want!" ;-) )

So what should I be looking at? I'm thinking of maybe a $300 budget all up - less would be better of course, but don't really know what's out there and what's quality & what's not. I think I'd like to get an overhead reel instead of the sidecast I've been using....

Anyway, what's your thoughts people? (hope you're out there JPS ;-)

cheers,

- b.

Brendon,

In relation to the outfit do you want it for bait fishing, spinning or a combination of both ?

In relation to top overheads that are available I would suggest the following reels .

Diawa 7HT
Diawa SL20SH
Diawa SL30SH
ABU 6500 CT
ABU 7000
Penn 525 GS
Penn 525 Mag
Penn 535 Mag

Depending on the diameter of line that you are wanting to use will determine if you need the larger reels.

Note that these reels start from around $150 and go up with the 525 Mag being at the top end of about $250.

In regards to rods for bait fishing the pick of Blanks to make up would be the Kilwell Pendulum 1.
I have this blank and have recommended it to a number of the guys bait fishing along the West cost. It is too heavey for spinning over long periods , cost depending on where you shop should be between 120 to 150.
I can help you if you want to go build up the rod.
If you are wanting a rod that can be used for Spinning and not cost to much the I would suggest on of the Penn or Silstart Graphite rods . These will get a good distance and are within your budget guidlines of $300 overall with the reel.

If you are interested in trying most of the reels out as well as the rods I can bring mine down for you to try before you buy.
It would be much better for you to see how the different outfits feel before handing over your hard earned cash to the shops as there are so many options available to you to chooose from.

Hope that gives you a few ideas.

If you are wanting to keep it simple and still get much better distance , I would suggest sticking with the sidecast and getting a better rod to really improve on your distances.

I will bring my PPG Heavey surf blank down next time we meet for you to try out the sidecast on and you will be supprised at how far this will go with the reel.

Hope that gives you a few ideas and I will be interested to see some other ideas.

Note that a good threadline will also deliver top distances when matched to a good technique .

Regards:)

Hi Brendon, I have a Silstar 4.5m Graphite rod (3pce for ease of travelling) teamed with a Okuma EZ65 spinning reel loaded with 300m of Fins Braid. Works well for me. Tried overheads but lost confidence/interest after spending the best fishing time unpicking birdsnests. Works very well for some and hopefully will for me one day - patience permitting

Combination of both I think.

Yes, I was going to talk to you about having a closer look at your gear next time there's a casting session. Would definitely like to try any of the rods you think might be suitable.[/quote]

That's heaps of ideas actually! ;-)

Yes, your right - that's probably the best idea for now.

That'd be great thanks Jeremy - much appreciate it.

Grant - thanks for the reminder re Gotone. I'd forgotten about their discount thing.

Cheers,
