I was thinking of purchasing some new gear off ebay. Some of the gear is really cheap for what it appears to be. Has anybody purchased anything and if so how did you find it?
Thanks in andvance.

Hello,
I have purchsed a few items from ebay, i dont really know how serious you take your fishing but personally i would not bother with the cheaper stuff as it would not last me that long before something goes wrong. i would much prefer to spend a bit more $ and get something that lasts a life time.
But then thats my opinion.
an item that i bought from there was a bait runner reel which i used once and the gear/bearing died on me. could have been a one of thing but you dont want to hook onto something decent and your gear dies. should have heard me sing and praise about that particular reel (12lb line) when i was hook on to something decent in PPB. that fish must have had about 150m of line hanging from its mouth for 3-5 days until the hook rot away! LOL

If ya want cheap stuff off ebay let me know I have a shed full of the rubbish!!!!!!
How much is a 7kilo snapper worth?
Yeah yeah I know you can catch the big fish with the cheap stuff too.
But its your call..
I have found that if your buying quality items then you will not get them any cheaper once you add postage..
Go and haggle with your shop
Example Shimano BTR4500B one shop $219 another shop with an arm twist $165 you do the maths
If ya want quality items then don't shop ebay thats my experience what there is of it..

Hi F-Dave,
Sorry i could not remember what brand name that reel was but it is a cheap Chinese made reel... nothing against the Chinese but it was an aweful reel. it ended up in the water straight after i lost that fish as i only got it for around $20.
i should have used it as a sinker but then it was too big and heavy for even that...
with regards to ebay having cheaper high end reels, well yes i agree that sometimes it is not worth the trouble once posting/shipping charge is considered.
you should always look at prices in shops first before shopping on ebay.
in saying that, i have scored some awesome reels off ebay and for about 1/2 to 2/3 the price so it is good!
another option is to look at ebay in USA as well as it is slightly cheaper for some items, especially with the current exchange rate (june 07).
i have bought the following from ebay and they are really good value:
shimano culcutta 200 - $95 RRP - approx 300
shimano culcutta 400 - $80 400
avet sx 5.1 - $200 350
penn (cant remember model) - $80 200
daiwa certate 3500 - $280 550
tica taurus 3500 - $160 400
so, there are some good bargains, just have to be patient and keep a look out for items you want and remember to never get too attached to a certain item where you risk ending up bidding more than what you initially set out to pay for.
good luck and good ebaying hehehe.... i am an ebay junky!

Bought two reels from the internet arm of a local retailer - both real cheap - $20 - $35.. picked them up from a warehouse, sat in the car outside for a play & the level wind on the baitcaster kept jamming about 10mm from the end of its run. Returned to warehouse and was given another one with the comment "oh! we sell so many of these we gotta expect the odd bum one. If it happens again just bring it back and we'll replace it - no sweat !!! Later opened it up to find the drive gear for the level wind was plastic... Chucked that one ... still got an overhead boat reel which has not been used yet. Really upset them when i told them I would not leave any feedback on Ebay. They wanted to know what I thought I would achieve - they would continue selling heaps anyway. Interesting that when I went to the retail outlet the staff fobbed me off and I had to return to the warehouse..
Be careful my friends...be very, very careful.

I think BeeFus' comments are wise ones.
would you buy a $15 reel from your local tackle shop? if so - then you will probably get the same level of quality off ebay except you don't have anyone to return it to.
if you are going to buy "quality" gear off ebay do your homework. Just because you buy it off ebay does not mean it is a bargain. Make sure it is a reputable seller.
Know what you want to buy.
Know how much you can buy it for locally.
Do the sums - don't forget postage and currency conversion if o/s

I think if you go into ebay armed with the "I know what i'm after and how much it costs in the shop" attitude you cant go wrong. Steer clear from noname imitation reels....
Sometimes you will find some real bargains from the US sellers, and if you contact them and indicate you want to buy more of the same item they'll even give you a bit of a discount.
I'm making some deepsea rigs at the moment and paid half price for swivels & crosslocks even after i included the postage costs
Cheers

Cranbourne Tackle is about to have there big tent sale again. Dates should be available this week if you can hold off, the sales were pretty good last year.

Ive got a group of young guys into fishing but these guys are unemployed , between homes and jobs ect so I have recently been buying rods and reels off ebay to get them started , as a mostly unpaid counsellor I cant afford to buy from anywhere else so the gear I buy is very cheap but it works out very well and the young guys are really having a ball fishing and spending less time running the streets.

Like they say its horses for courses or something like that..
You will still catch fish with the cheaper gear there is no dispute there at all..
Just as we know that quality stuff will last the test of time..
What your doing for the young fellas is for today and its a great effort.
I take my hat off to you

hillbilly hats off to you mate with luck they will be passing the info on to generations to come.
ebey - i got a crapload of bean sinkers cheap when the kids wanted to try fishing as well as some easyrigs both good value, id shy from rods n reels unless from private non power sellers, i got a few bait casters etc at good prices due to somones hubby passing on etc shop smart i guess, i tend to look for k-mart sales myself lot of cheap junk but they get in the good stuff at times too
lucky for me the girls love to fish the old cheapy k-mart combos got well used & abused, upgraded them to ugly sticks / shimanos now, 1st uglystick got paired with a shimano 4000 with instant anti revers and ratchet drag dam nice set up for a 7yo lol tryed talkin her out of the reel once id used it she was like "rite dad no chance" and she reminds me each time shes got a fish on "dam this is smooth dad", good times great memorys
cheers

Petew,
Sounds like you have one of our future top female fisho,s in the making and that has to be a very good thing so I hope she keeps it up and has fun at the same time.
I dunno how many blokes Ive spoken to who have daughters who say that they wish they had sons to take fishing, I think its a load of cods whallop,
As I say to them " the fish dont object to taking a bait off either sex so take your daughter fishing, you might find that its a very special and enjoyable experience for dad and daughter.
I have 2 daughters, the eldest who is 27 really enjoys dropping a line and has caught some very nice fish yet the youngest 17 year old wont have a bar of it and would rather go shopping.

7 yearolds make good bait, 11 year olds are a bit to big for the sharks to swallow.

Regarding E-bay purchases I've bought a lot of cheap stuff to try before upgrading to the more expensive name brands.
When the baitrunners first appeared it was a matter of virtually minutes before the chinese clones arrived. A purchase, try and I ended up with a couple of the big-name brands based on my initial experience.
Similarly when braid lines became all the rage I bought 300m of the stuff, gave it a run, played with leaders etc then went to a store to get the real thing.
From my perspective E-bay is a good place to try before you buy the expensive stuff.

Hi Guys I have bought some reels from ebay and so far have been lucky.
Gear so far
Tica Sportera 4750 from the States $55 includes postage retail $139
Omoto KAM overhead solid brass reel $50 retail $179
most of my terminal gear Gamakatzu circle hooks 10c each
A few Shimano Aernos reels $30 and daiwa 4000 $49
A few rods mostly crap but cheap
A lot of plastics to try, some good some crap
Best cheap value sarratoga from Tacklemania
if you know your product and retail price you can pick up some bargains
also rememer the cheap end Shimano ax series hyperloop etc is better than most Chinese reels with all the bells and whistles Corrosian is the biggest Killer of no name brands Any one ever seen a Shimano reel with corrosion
So beware if you do purchase from Ebay Check the product out check the company on the internet most of them dont exist quite a lot of them are Golden with the Aussie sellers name on them

I have purchased a bit of gear from www.graysonline.com.au its an australian auction site. The last item i picked was a Quantum bait runner, checked the web site, its a European brand used commomly over seas, reatail was around $150. from the auction site Including delivery I picked it up for $29 have used and found no probs, was actually quite suprised by the quality of it. Have also picked up some rods from the same site, again quite suprised by the quality. Sent a 15kg full roller game rod upto brother in qld , including delivery price was $26. he has used it and wants more. Again check the website or manufacture of the product and once you do your home work you can be lucky.

As someone who was absent from fishing for a few years due to various circumstances when i got back into it things had changed somewhat and technology had moved on.
The baitrunner reels weren't around earlier but I wanted to give them a go so I bought a couple of el cheapo ones from E-bay, learnt how to use them then upgraded to a couple of "name brand" ones.
I've also done this in other pursuits.
I find E-bay useful for the "putting the toe in the water" exercise then go elsewhere if I decide to take on something with a vengeance.
