Went to boat show and saw a couple of differant types of systems suitable for a 18ft half cabin.
Does anyone actually use one and recommend a type/brand?

I have a southwind on my 5.25mtr aluminium boat, am pretty happy with it saves alot of back work. I do use a ball float (forget the technical term)to raise my anchor of the bottom still as it saves the winch motor from the hard work and then just push the button to retrieve when it gets to the top. Very easy stuff compared to leaning over bow and pulling like buggery! Have had a problem once with winch under warranty sent it off and they repaired and sent back no problem. I assume the south wind is one of the cheaper ones around as I got it in a package deal when I purchased boat.

To old to pull anchors..got winches on both boats .. personally i prefer the free spooling drum over a straight out winch.. this is where yr anchor desends under its own weight and the drum on the winch free spools..the other type is where the winch actually lowers the anchor from the rotating drum ( slow process)
if yr running a winch u might also want to think about dual batteries

Once you go electric winch you will ask yourself why the hell did I not get one earlier.....I fish for fun and when it comes to anchoring...getting wet and using energy that is not needed is not fun.....

anyway I had a Muir 600 Its a fixed rate (very good brand) first and now I got free spooling(just means it drops anchor quicker) but retrievel is the same...

Any way I am selling my Muir 600...if you are interested email me...EOI(make me an offer) still in very good condition...Nothing wrong with it just upgraded that all...Perfect size for any boat from 16foot to 22foot...I had it on a 22foot Huntsman half cab then put it on 21 foot haines signiture..

I Have a Sea Breeze 700f its a cheap anchor winch around $400/$500 with stainless gypsy works fine once you use electric anchor system you will never go back to arm pulling back aching retrieval using float anchor retrieval is also a good idea especialy in deep water takes the strain off the winch I have a 5.4 Savage Bluewater

I use an older Muir VRC400 which is 7/8 of the way through a rebuild.
I really can't visualise the wife doing the anchor thing with a large CQR pick
One word of advice; if you can try to pull your winch apart annually, make sure all fasteners are free to undo and tighten, all bearings are greased and the paintwork is kept in good condition.
It's cost me about $200 to get replacement parts for mine after neglecting it for a few years.

Hi Alan,
How much line do you run on your anchor as i have a problem with my anchor well not being deep enough. are you happy with the 700f for your boat as i have a similar size boat and looking at getting the 800f?
tks

Hi Mark You will not be disappointed with the Seabreaze product the 800f normaly retails around $1100 but usually can pick one up for $900,
with the stainless gypsy you should run 14mm silver or simmilar
if it has nylon gypsy use 12mm
I have some 14mm silver left if you require some
I run 50m of rope with 6m of close link 6mm chain on a Sarka Anchor
When you purchase the Windlass all of the fixing and terminals are in the kit but they do not supply the 8mm wire
A dvd is also part of the kit which shows you how to install
If you email South Pacific they will gladly help you
Hope this helps by the way the 800 f is much more powerfull than the new 710f which is the replacement for mine
hope this helps regards Alan

Mark call JV Marine as they are the reps for Haines Signature though I know what your saying about the anchor well it is wide enough but due to the nature of electric winches they coil large circles I modified mine slightly with extending the front higher to stop spillage

Guys,
1.Anchor winches are totally over rated.
2.JV Marine charge $90.00 per hour for labour without proof of how long the job should/would/or did take to do.
3.Spend $90.00 total and pick up an anchor yanker(foam ball) and drop your anchor and retrieve it as many times a day as your heart desires @$#@ easy boys!!!:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

For $90 you can get the large orange inflatable plastic one..
the styrene ones don't last forever and will get roughed up by use.

never used a syrene one but I have the orange one

I'm looking to buy an anchor yanka... I like the idea of inflatable ones. Is that like an exercise ball is it? Where do they sell em?

Also, with anchor yankas, do they rough up the bottom more than pulling it in by hand? What are people's thoughts? I wouldn't get one if it disturbs the bottom too much.

Cheers,

Brent

I got mine from the place in fitzroy on gertrude st not far from smith st
but they have them at whitworths in Elizabeth st
http://www.whitworths.com.au/main_itemdetail.asp?cat=148&item=257&intAbsolutePage=2&LinkedItem=240&search123=anchor%20yanka
this one is similar to mine
and I cannot see them doing anymore damage than without using one..

By the time you pull, pull, pull your anchor by hand you will drag it so much along the bottom you could get paid by the state gov for dredging!!
If you use a foam/orange plastic ball you can yank the anch really quickly and effectively without busting your #ss,back, hands or sea bed!!

After seeing how easy it was when I went out with Beefus a couple of weeks back Im definately going to get an anchore yanker, I cant see that they do anymore damage to the bottom than a normal anchore
Also I went out to the reef at Mt Martha for a night fish on Saturday night and trying to get my anchore in was more difficult than it normally is, with 2 of us pulling it in we soon found out that we had set the anchore in a car tyre that was dumped on the reef, boy was it bloody heavy.

Yeah Kaz its a lot easier on the back but a winch is better!
just might treat myself soon..
Does John V have a boxing day sale?

The South Pacific 700 is ok as a winch not the fastest but still better than getting wet, when wiring get 8mm wire or thicker and make sure the relay is accesible as sometimes you have to give them a tap if over loaded
(anyone who boohoos anchor winches hasn't been in a two foot swell with the waves bouncing over the bow) good luck
