The post Favourite piece of tackle raised by Grant gave me this idea.

What tackle do we have which we no longer use and why.

I have several pieces that are in retirement, some are no longer used due to the fact I have updated.

I will list 2 rods that are in retirement and the reason why.

1. I have a light rod that I built ( first ever built rod ). First time i used it was fishing for bream in the yarra, reel spooled with 4 pound line, size 6 hook baited with live shrimp, first and only fish caught on it was a 9.8kg jewie.

2. 9ft rod with a dawia reel, spooled with 6kg line, fishing kerfered rd pier early one morning with a howling southerly, waves smashing over pier, 1 fish caught on new rod and reel 10.3kg snapper. Rod in retirement.

A "foil" rod with an old timber Alvey reel.
The rod was my father's and became mine by default when he died.
Checking with the rod man at Werribee Plaza he told me the story of these rods.
Apparently at the end of WW2 fishing stuff was in short supply so the returned diggers used what they could. Old tank aerials were made into fishing rods and were sold as foil rods.

I have my grandfathers first ever old cane rod that I wouldnt dare use it would have to be approx 110 years old and my most prized posession.
I also have a couple of Paravanes that I have retired due to the fact that every time I go near em I end up with hooks embedded in my flesh, deep enough to have them medically removed,{ twice now in one week }
and I am hopeless at using them, so if anyone else wants em let me know.

i hope you seriously didn't get rid of the cane rod kaz.....even if you do not use it...infact i wouldnt even use it myself....at 110 years old and in very good condition kaz would be worth a couple of bucks and worth keeping and a bit of a collectors item now....

there is sentimental memories in that rod and also other moemories and to me it is a rod that should still be passed through the generations

cheers

Oz, theres no way that rod will ever be used and the only way I will be parted from it is when Im off to join my old pop, and then it goes to my daughters with strict instructions and the odd threat that I will haunt them if they even think about disposing of it.
I would like to think that eventually my grandson will be the proud owner of this old cane stick and in knowing how special it is he will look after it.
