Religiously! Gippsland is where i love to fish and it's all hardbodies and softplastics. I didn't touch a single piece of bait in the 7 days I was there and we caught over 100 fish.

As for closer to home, pinkies at Black Rock are a huge amount of fun on gulp pumpkinseed minnows and can be had now till late august on dusk.

Plastics are a bit harder to use in WPB due to currents, etc, but where there's a will, there's a way!

Cheers,

brent

Absolutely, no matter where I fish I always have a rod loaded with a soft plastic and usually do better than using a bait.

I have only hooked 1 fish in all my SP expeditions so far (big flattie and it busted the line).

I've watched videos and tried different types and retrieves but for me bait works much better. I'll still keep trying the SP's though

love sp's, went out today in wp with no bait in the boat. probably not a good idea with the water being so cold but I still managed a couple of salmon and snook.

SPs are the way of the future for most anglers as bait supply is starting to dry up next seasons pipies will be about $20 pk
Myself ive had mixed fortunes on sps especialy the gulp live
Im going to try the Atomics on snapper come October they are a bit cheaper than Berkley
but thats on one rod the others will have squid and gars on

So what is the best technique for snapper on soft plastics? Jigging?

Slow drift, Cast ahead. Slow bounce back. But many Variations work. Snapper are keen lure takers in the right circumstances. The biggest thing is believing they work and using them.

Cast as far as you can let sp drop to bottom then two hard jerks and repeat and have patience
use no5 jighead try 10 inch sand worm or 6 inch stick bait its just trial and error take a lot of different lures last year nuclear chicken was the flavour

Thanks Guys. I've been really keen to give SP's on snapper a shot but have been a little hesitant due to no knowledge of technique. This is definatley on the cards come summer!!

Thats a killer techinique for flatties. Good value in the shallows where the bigger models hang out. Not much chop for the bigger snaps though. Probably would work but runt flathead get in the way. I reckon anyway.

i have just got my first s/p rod and hanging out to land my first fish on it, im hopping to us it very soon tried it around Paterson Lakes a few times but it was mainly to get used to it. It will be on the boat when the snapper come in and something to try when the old methods are not working all that well.

What soft plastics do you guys use, and do you change the type or color re the fish you are targeting or the conditions ?

Hi Rep Pans when you fish plastics do it in conjunction with the tried and true bait fishing
you will find if they don't take live bait they usually won't take SPs so many people including myself when 1st using SPs did what you were talking about stick with it once you start catching fish with SPs you will use less bait I have even caught snapper using snapper snatchers with Berkley flat strip

Im an SPs addict and have just about every plastic and jig head you can get, what ones I use depends on what Im fishing for I get good results using Gulp worms and Squidgies of all colors for pinkies, Berkley crab, Gulp blood and sand worms and small grubs for Bream, small grubs for yting and a multitude of differant plastics for flatties, Salmon, KG yting, Coutta, snook ect, I recently hooked a 5 kilo gummy on a plastic eel soaked in tuna oil.

My tips for using plastics are as follows,

As conditions are very differant from day to day you make yr choice of what colour plastics to use by the colour and condition of the water.

On a dull day use dull colours, pumkin seed, motor oil, brown ect.

On a bright day use bright colours,

On a black night use dark brown, purple, dark grey and black,

In dirty water use fluro like bright yellow, chartruese, red , orange, lime green ect

In clear water use natural colours for the less aggressive fish.

On bars and dark spots use contrasting colours.

Every now and then when the fish are quiet I throw in an oddball and present the reverse such as a dark colour in clear water as its un natural and stands out and more often or not it gets taken, Hot pink and lime green are good colours for an oddball

Also as a rule of thumb Copper, Brass and Gold give off a deeper flash in coloured water.

But colours are just one factor to think of you also have to consider retrieval / trolling speed and plastics action and how you rig and match the Sp to the jig head and so on which will also come with practice and in the beginning alot of patience.

I hope this helps a little.

After fishing for many years I have lost my first rod to stupidity
I had a nice sport im6 blank with cork short butt handle a daiwa reel and a soft plastic .The rod did not fit the snapper rack very well being so short in the handle any way thought id have a cup of coffee always brings the fish around more than burley and wallop of goes the plastic rod straight out of the rack on its way to Frankston any one catching a ray or snapper with a rod in tow give me a call
AB
PS any one else want to own up to rather stupid acts could be a good laugh

Down the Cut at Queenscliff recently with the boys and a fair few people having a fish, one guy has a few rods spread out and is being a **** when a charter boat comes past, told the boys to reel in, just in case, multirod guy near us laughs and makes a smart-**** comment. Well next thing ione of his rods flies off the pier as the line tangles in the charter boat props and just keeps on going. GUY IS GOING BALLISTIC yelling out to the boat, but they just keep on motoring. Bye bye rod, reel and line. I didn't laugh, well not out loud anyway as we cast back in and keep on fishing. Guy packs up carrying on about the injustice he suffered and leaves, then I had a laugh out loud along with the boys. One less dickbrain there and lots more fishing space for everyone else. No fish for us, but a priceless day nonetheless.

Hi Geoff,
Got two new rods from Profish Imports last week. Ended up getting the 7'6 General purpose and the 2 piece Plastilure. Both are fantastic and I am hoping to get the matching reels this week or at the fishing show next week.
My brother is a keen fly fisherman and thought that he could nearly cast flies with the larger rod. Rigging the lure rod with 2-3kg line and 5kg on the other.
Can't wait to get amongst them.
Mark.
