Hi Guys Over the years fishing gear has improved immensely carbon rods, braid etc this snapper season I tried an experiment using heavy medium and light tackle in Port Phillip bay barometer high tide good wind s/SW targeting big snapper on the heavy gear shimano rod 5 to 8 kilo 20lb mono 50 lb leader 5/0 6/0 snood hooks on the medium 3 to 5 k silstar crystal tip 14lb braid 36lb carbon fluoro leader 5/0 6/0 snood hooks and on the light gear 6lb beastmaster mono on a 4lb nibble tip whiting rod with a 4000 sienna reel 12 lb leader 5/0 6/0 snood hooks
Result heavy gear 0
Medium 2 snapper around 2.5k
light 3 snapper around 3.5k + i got dusted a few times
which just goes to prove the fish are getting smarter and its time to start scaling down my rod collection
all fish caught in side of mouth as I only use circle hooks makes it simple to release fish you don't need
but what a lot of fun catching them on light gear

Ive also found that its more fun and far better sport to use lighter gear and my catch rate has much improved especially when fishing the beach and in the surf.

Fishing light, there is no better way,

Whiting, bream, pinkies, 2-3kg, snapper and all the other species you can get using large snapper baits, no heavier that 10kg, jewies 15kg, landbased game 15kg,

All landbased of course
