Removal of illegally berthed vessels at Footscray Wharf

Parks Victoria is the local port manager for the designated waters of the Maribyrnong River and is responsible for the management of moorings and berths in accordance with the Port Services (Local Port) Regulations 2004.

Parks Victoria has an obligation to ensure that a safe, navigable port is maintained and as such has the power to remove any vessel that has, or is likely to, interfere with the safe and efficient operation of the local ports under its control.


The Port Services (Local Port) Regulation 2004 give Parks Victoria, as the local port manager, the authority to remove vessels or direct the owner of the vessel to remove that vessel, specifically if the vessel is illegally berthed/moored, abandoned, causing an obstruction, likely to cause danger to the safety of any person, unseaworthy or likely to be a hazard or impediment to the safe and efficient operation of the port (Regulation 324).


Parks Victoria, in association with the Port of Melbourne Corporation, has identified the following vessels which are compromising the safe operating environment within Footscray Wharf and will commence removal of these vessels from Monday 17 May 2010.


• No name, no markings, 12m (approx.) yacht, white fibreglass hull, white superstructure, single mast
• No name, no markings, 15m (approx.) cabin cruiser, white concrete hull, white superstructure, stern-mounted timber marlin board
• ‘Ajax III’ registration MV7127, black steel hull, blue superstructure
• No name, no markings, 12m (approx.) cabin cruiser, white hull, white and grey superstructure, stern drive, blue canvas awning
