• REC FISH Press Release

    “WE FISH”
    Press release
10th June 2010 THERE WILL NEVER BE ANY FUNDING FOR RECFISH
UNDER A LABOR GOVERNMENT[/b]“WE FISH” have tried to remain politically neutral, and we have endeavoured to speak to all major political parties.

We have asked the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry (DAFF) and Minister Burk...e about funding, and were told point blank that; quote “THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT PAY THE WAGES OF AN INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP WHO CAN LOBBY AGAINST THEM.”

And from a Senate Estimates hearing last week:

Senator COLBECK—Is the department aware of the minister saying to the industry that the government is not interested in funding somebody that might lobby against them?
    Mr Thompson—Yes, Senator.
Senator COLBECK—Is the department in any discussions with any other organisations regarding the funding of the peak body?
Mr Thompson—Not that I am aware of.

Yet this Federal Government lays down the welcome mat for fringe groups such as the Pew Foundation and Humane Society International (HSI). This has included inviting them to join Australian delegations to international marine conventions, while recreational fishing bodies are not even consulted. The Department of Environment also provided ongoing audience to the Pew Foundation in its misguided quest to declare the Coral Sea as a no-take zone – a position Minister Garrett blindly followed. In complete contrast, Under this Labor Government, there have been moves to ban the fishing of both the mako and thresher sharks without any consultation with recreational fishers.Right around Australia, the Labor Government is running a marine bioregional planning process that is set to lock recreational fishing out of enormous areas of our coastline without any more consultation than lip service.

    This government is

    * out of touch with the average Mums and Dads who want to take their kids down to the beach and have a fish on their day off.

    * out of touch with the estimated 4 million recreational fishers that will rise up against their Labor representatives if not listened to.

We are now left with no choice but to formalise rallies prior to the upcoming Federal Election.

The announcement of more restrictions on recreational fishing is imminent; NOW is the time to make a stand!
